Like most women, I had never heard of Diastasis Recti until someone pointed it out to me – over three years after I became a mother.
My eldest child was one and I still looked six months pregnant, my back was really sore every morning and my pelvic floor was destroyed despite doing all the exercises.
Diastasis Recti is really common after pregnancy – it’s a separation of the stomach muscles, causing women to look pregnant months or in some cases (mine) years after birth.
Off I trotted to visit the doctor, who quickly confirmed my self diagnosis.
It’s so simple to examine yourself to see if you have it –
- Lie on your back with your legs bent and your feet flat on the floor.
- Raise your shoulders off the floor slightly and look down at your stomach. Using the tips of your fingers, feel between the edges of the muscles, above and below your belly button. See how many fingers you can fit into the gap between your muscles.
- Do this regularly to check that the gap is gradually decreasing.
Luckily, my gap is only 2 fingers – many other women have much bigger gaps.
The doctor said he would refer me for physio and after six months of waiting I FINALLY had a letter asking me to make an appointment – I’m being seen on the 11th July 2017 – stand by for updates!
