Mobile phones are no doubt a fantastic way to stay in touch with loved ones, catch up on the latest news, and find your way to your destination using the maps plus much more. But is your child old enough to have one? It’s a tough call for many parents because there are many factors to think about and it is not just about age.
An Independent School in Putney has pulled together the following advice to give you all the information you need to make your decision.
What are the benefits?
You really can’t beat the convenience of being able to call your child whenever you need them to find out where they are or ask them to come home early. If you ever have an emergency you can get hold of them as quickly as possible or they can call you to ask for help or let you know what’s going on. For an extra level of safety you can install apps to track the location of your child to give you peace of mind that you know exactly where they are at all times.
Mobile phones can also be used to aid study time or homework. There are so many apps designed to help with revision and the internet has endless amount of information that your children may need as part of their coursework or homework task.
What are the downsides?
As with everything there are pros and cons of having a mobile phone. You need to make sure your child is responsible enough to be able to look after it properly. They also need to be clear on when they can and can’t use it and any time limitations you may want to put to make sure they aren’t distracted from anything else.
